Well, there are usually two ways that a homeowner or a neighbor ends up with a bad fence. They either tried to do it themself, or they hired a bad fence company, someone that thought they could do the job right. You chose to hire the handyman who fixed your sink, to build your fence. It looked spectacular when he finished, initially. He told you that you had a one year warranty. He did such a great job on it. All of your friends and family tell you how great it looks. You paid him the money you owed him. He managed to save you $500 from all of those companies that specialized in fences. You used that $500 towards a new computer. Several months go by. A heavy storm comes through late one night. You can hear the wind howling in the fire place. You wake up the next morning and start to make your coffee. You look out the kitchen window and this is what you see. You immediately call the guy that built it. He doesn't answer. Go figure. You leave him a message that your fence fell over. He doesn't call you back. Several days pass and several voice mails later he still has not called you about coming to fix, or I should say, replace your wood fence. There is no repairing this puppy, at this point you are replacing everything. You have to teardown the entire fence and rebuild it from scratch the correct way.

How are you going to enforce that one year warranty that he give you verbally? How are you going to get him to fix this problem? You call several fence companies to give you a quote on the repair cost. You are told that it cannot be repaired. Well, you are actually told that it can be repaired but that it is going to look horrible if it is repaired. It needs to be rebuilt. You are now looking at having to pay for a second fence as well as pay to have the first one removed. Your fence that you paid $1,500 for is now costing you almost $4,000. You now are ready to sue the handyman that built the first fence. Maybe you are lucky enough that you have an address to have the sherriff serve him at. You arrive for court and are feeling good because he didn't even show up. You are awarded a judgement for $4,000. How are you going to get your money? Actually, the court system cannot make him pay you if he does not have the money. In all likelyhood you will never see a penny of that money. We have seen this far too many times. Several customers hired us to build their second fence because the first one that was built was inferior.
Occasionally, the person who built the first inferior fence was actually the homeowner themself. They thought building a fence was easy. This photo below is what we refer to in the industry as a "harry homeowner" special. They tried to save money by getting 6 foot tall posts instead of 8 foot tall posts. Was it really worth saving the $50, now that the fence looks like this?

Was it really worth doing it yourself to save $100 or hiring someone incompetent to save $200? We SPECIALIZE in FENCES. Our company would NEVER build a wood fence like either of these featured here. Our Raleigh fence company gives a 15 year WARRANTY in writing. Our company has been in business in North Carolina long enough to know not to do some crazy jerry-rigged fence like this. We don't fix sinks, we construct fences.
