Chapel Hill is a town in Orange County, North Carolina. It is the home of UNC Chapel Hill (University of North Carolina) which is said to be the oldest state-supported university in the country. The population of Chapel Hill is around 55,000 to 60,000 people. Because of its rich history and scenery, it is a common and favorite place for weddings and people to get married.
Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh make up the three corners of the "Triangle" area, named in 1959 because of the creation of Research Triangle Park, a technological business park between Durham and Raleigh, home to employers such as IBM, Cisco, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
Chapel Hill's town center, sits on top of a hill which was originally occupied by a small Anglican "chapel of ease", called New Hope Chapel. The Chapel was built in 1752, and the site is now occupied by The Carolina Inn. The town was established to serve the University of North Carolina and eventually grew up around the college. The town's main street, called Franklin Street, was named in memory of Benjamin Franklin. Chapel Hill was chartered in 1851. In 1968, about a year after schools became racially integrated, Chapel Hill was the first mostly white municipality in the country to elect an African American mayor named Howard Lee.
Lee served from 1969 until 1975 and helped establish Chapel Hill Transit, Chapel Hill's bus system. In 2002, legislation was passed that made the bus system free of fares for all riders. This lead to a large increase in mass transit usage. The system is financed through Federal grants, UNC student fees, and Chapel Hill and Carrboro city taxes. They have added several hybrid and articulated buses. An articulated bus, is a single-deck design bus that comprises of two rigid parts linked together by a pivoting joint, like a railroad car. This allows a longer legal overall length, and thus a higher passenger capacity than previous standard buses. It enables the bus to still turn within the limitations of the roads it is driven on.
