Durham and Wake Forest, North Carolina.

The town of Wake Forest began in 1832. Wake Forest was incorporated in 1909.  Wake Forest and Fuquay Varina are both celebrating their centennials in 2009.

Wake Forest was the original home of Wake Forest University for 122 years before it moved to Winston-Salem in 1956.

The college’s move combined with the relocation of U.S. 1 to the west of town brought some economic hardships. The town survived and attracted new industries and businesses in the mid 1960s and early 70s. Those companies and businesses disappeared due to changes in the economy and the growth of global markets. The Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce and other agencies are currently seeking new employment venues.

Despite the ups and downs, Wake Forest has had enormous growth in its population, with more than 26,000 residents. Wake Forest is close to Youngsville and Rolesville. Youngsville has an estimated population of 750. Rolesville has an estimated population of 1700.

Forbes magazine ranked the 100 suburbs across the United States that posted the highest growth rates between 2000 and 2006. The rankings were based on U.S. Census Bureau data that were compiled and analyzed by a St. Louis-based research firm It iincluded cities, towns, and villages with over 10,000 people in 2000. Wake Forest was just behind Holly Springs at No. 20. Wake Forest University also made Forbes magazine for Best Colleges in America.

There have been several adjustments because of the unexpected growth and the increased needs of new residents. One such adjustment included merging the town’s water and sewer systems with Raleigh’s.
