HOW DID FUQUAY VARINA GET ITS NAME?

According to Fuquay Varina's website, Frenchman William Fuquay, settled in the small town called Sippihaw, North Carolina which was named after the Native American tribe that inhabited that area. Fuquay's great-grandson, Stephen, discovered a spring during the middle of the 1800s while plowing their plantation. Stephen felt that the mineral water from the springs had medicinal qualities. As word traveled, many locals began to help their springs establish such reputation, bringing people from nearby communities and counties to the springs.

Around 1860, Mr. Fuquay sold the springs to investors who formed the Chalybeate Springs Company to market the attraction. At that time another resident, J. D. Ballentine, had just returned home from the Civil War. J.D. was the town’s schoolmaster before going off to war. During his tour of duty, he had received letters from women who wrote the troops to boost morale. The woman signed her name “Varina." Varina's real name was Virginia Avery. She would later meet and fall in love with Ballentine, though he continued to call her Varina throughout their lives. Ballentine became the first postmaster at the new post office in town in 1880, which he named “Varina." A community grew south of the springs, near the post office and the couple’s general store. In time, it adopted the same name. Ballentine’s success with business allowed him to construct the local historic landmark Ballentine Spence House in 1910, the first house to have plumbing and electricity in the area. This house is still standing and is located at 109 E. Spring Street, Fuquay-Varina, NC.

In 1902, Sippihaw was renamed “Fuquay Springs” in honor of its founding family and was officially incorporated in 1909. Fuquay Varina just celebrated 100 years this year and is having a celebration on June 6th.When it was incorporated, Fuquay Springs town limits included the Varina business district. But Varina separated itself the following year when the Varina Union Station was constructed and a new post office was established because of the lobbying of Ballentine. Four years later, the Bank of Varina was started. As Varina became its own hub for agriculture, the Fuquay Springs Corporation formed and began bottling and selling mineral water from the springs commercially. Local businesses continued to pop up and, in 1927, Highway 401 was paved through town. This decreased travel times to and from Raleigh and other nearby areas. Today 401 runs as far north as Warrenton and as far south as Laurinburg.

Fuquay Springs and Varina had become major trading areas for Wake County, Harnett County, and Johnston County. Advancements in automobiles and roads caused a decline in tourism at the springs. Instead of visiting the springs, people in the area began visiting the coastal areas as travel times decreased. The shared emphasis on agricultural and industrial growth brought the two towns to a mutual vision, and as their residents commingled together, the eventual merger into Fuquay-Varina in 1936 occurred.

Angier is a small town south of Fuquay Varina. Angier has an estimated population of 4,200. Sanford is about 38 miles south west of Fuquay.

Sanford a nearby town to Lillington was named after C.O. Sanford, a railroad civil engineer critical to the building of the rail lines through the area that later became the city of Sanford. Sanford is located in Lee County, and was formed from parts of the surrounding three counties in 1907. Sanford and Jonesboro were the two main towns in the area. Eventually Sanford had grown big enough that it merged with Jonesboro.

FUQUAY VARINA GNATS?

Fuquay Varina, Angier, and Holly Springs are very sandy areas of North Carolina. It is also an ideal area to find gnats because of the soft soil. Eye gnats are most prevelant throughout eastern North Carolina and are very common pests in many parts of the United States.

Eye gnats are attracted to humans and most animals. Eye gnats feed on mucous or sebaceous secretions, pus, and blood. This is why you always feel them attacking your eyes and why they are called "eye" gnats. These insects do not pierce the skin, which is why you don't feel them on the rest of your body..

Gnats are extremely annoying and persistent pests. If swatted, more quickly return. Eye gnats do spread disease organisms that cause conjunctivitis (pink eye).

In North Carolina, eye gnats can be extremely annoying in backyards and on golf courses. Mosquito repellents can provide temporary relief from eye gnats. ULV insecticide sprays on a community-wide basis may provide temporary control of adults, but more adults invade the treated area after the insecticide has washed off.
