As you may or may not know, the North Carolina Railroad played a key part in the development of North Carolina cities and towns. Garner is no different and was started with the coming of the railroad through the area in 1847. Garner was chosen as the location of a station of the railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte. In 1878, "Garner's Station" was established, like many other towns, by the construction of a post office. The Town of Garner's Station was incorporated in 1883.
According to the late Parker Rand, 3,000 acres of land was given to his forefathers by King George in 1759. A portion of the area was to become the site of a community called Rand's Mill. Rand's Mill Pond was renamed Lake Benson later on. It was enlarged in 1951 and is currently used as a reservoir.
Garner has seen continued growth throughout the decades. In 1891, the village of Garner's Station had its charter repealed, and in 1905 application was requested and granted for its reinstatement as the Town of Garner. The first town officialswere appointed to serve one year or until their successors were elected and qualified.
Although there are several legends, nobody knows for sure how Garner got its name. One story is that Thomas Bingham named the town after combining a general store with a post office. Merriam Webster's dictionary defines “garner" figuratively as a "store."
Parker Rand believed that Garner was named after a family who lived in the area but later moved to Texas. Still others think the town was named by Henry Fort, a black carpenter who owned some land along the railroad. An author, William S. Powell, believes that Garner received its name from its founder, H.C. Garner, though there is very little information about the man.
An ancient map dated 1887 shows Garner connected to the city of Raleigh by a road called Holloman's Road. In 1910, the unpaved road became known as Number 10 and US 70. Highway 70 was the first paved road in North Carolina. It was financed by the first bonds sold by North Carolina to build highways. It was also called The Central Highway because it started connected western North Carolina's mountains to eastern North Carolina's sea in 1911. The portion of the highway between Garner and Raleigh was paved around 1916 or 1917. US 70 runs south east out of Garner into Clayton, NC.
Today it is estimated that Garner has a population of about 25,000. With the increased population and residential growth, businesses and services have blossomed in Garner and are expected to continue to grow.
Clayton is a town of which the majority lies in Johnston County, North Carolina. A very small portion of the town rests in Wake County. Clayton is about 13 miles southeast of downtown Raleigh. It has an estimated population of about 14,000 people. Much of that increase in growth can be attributed to the town's close proximity to places like Cary, Raleigh, and RTP.

In 2008, construction was completed on the Highway 70 Clayton Bypass, a 10 mile stretch from Interstate 40 along the southern portion of Clayton to highway 70 business in Smithfield. In June 2009, an explosion occurred at the ConAgra food plant. It injured roughly 30-40 people and several were still missing.
The construction took only about two years and saves an enormous amount of driving time due to the significant number of traffic lights on Highway 70.
