Knightdale is a town located in Wake County. The population is estimated aaround 10,000. With the population boom experienced in the North Carolina area in the past two decades, Knightdale, a suburb of Raleigh, grew extensively as well.
Acorrding to the town of Knightdale's website, in 1700, the Lords Proprietor of the Carolina Colony hired John Lawson to explore the area. His 1,000-mile hike started near what is today Charleston, South Carolina. According to his diary, Lawson passed through the area sometime in February of 1701. In that diary, he scribed about a meeting he had with the Tuscarora Native American tribe on the banks of the Neuse River. Lawson made peace with the Tuscarora Native American tribe through the help of an interpreter.
The King of England received a report from Lawson and began to allocate the land to settlers. In 1730, John Hinton settled in near the Neuse River in what would eventually be called Knightdale near where today's Hodge Road and Old Faison Road intersect.
As more and more people arrived, the colonial government appointed Hinton to be the Justice of the Peace for Craven County, because Hinton's land was located in Craven County. Eventually, Johnston County was cut out of Craven County in the mid 1700s. Hinton owned seven plantations in the area, three of which are still in existance. They are The Oaks, Beaver Dam, and Midway.
Towards the end of the 19th century, locals wanted to establish a town. Henry Haywood Knight donated some of his land to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company in the hopes that the company would provide freight and passenger services to the town. Knight did not live to see the railroad arrive in Knightdale shortly after his death in 1904. Knightdale was named after him.
Like most of the other North Carolina cities and towns, the railroad and depot helped cause rapid development. Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company moved families into the area to take care of the railroad. Many of the older homes still there today were built specifically for the railroad workers and their families.
Knightdale became incorporated in 1927. 28 years after the fire that destroyed Apex, in 1940, a fire broke out in the center of Knightdale. The locals arrived to help extinguish the fire, but they were not able to control it until firemen arrived from Raleigh with enough water supply. Many businesses and houses were destroyed, but like all hardworking Americans, the townspeople rebuilt the historic downtown area.
Wendell is a town in Wake County with an estimated population of 5,000. Wendell was first settled in the 1850s. Farmers in Granville County were hit with what was called the Granville County Wilt. The farmer's tobacco had "wilted" and the farmers wanted to find somewhere with more fertile land so they moved to what is known today as Wendell.
The town of Wendell's name came from a teacher who was asked to come up with a name for the town. The teacher came up with the name Wendell because Oliver Wendell Homes was one of his favorite poets.
Of course every town has a post office and the first one was built in 1891. This post office was restored by the Wendell Historical Society. It is located at the corner of 4th Street and Oakwood. Wendell was officially incorporated in 1903. Wendell contains four buildings and a district listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
In, 1906, three years after Wendell's incorporation, the Raleigh and Pamlico Sound Railroad Company decided to bring the railroad into western Wake County. Edgar Barbee and Falconer Arendell organized the Zebulon Company to be developed that same year. The company got its charter on February 15, 1906. Then the forty-nine acres was divided into lots, blocks, and streets. In 1907 the town was officially recognized as Zebulon, North Carolina. Zebulon got its name after Zebulon Baird Vance. Vance was the Governor of North Carolina during the American Civil War.
Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon have been great places to build wood fences. Both cities growth has made them ideal places to expand our company's territory to. The population of both cities is still so small that we don't do a whole lot of fences in the area, but the few fences we do construct for our clients in that area are mainly for privacy. In fact, the dog ear privacy fence is the most popular choice for a fence in the knightdale and wendell areas. New developments lack yard space and privacy. We are able to save residents of these towns hundreds of dollars on their privacy fences. Contact our Zebulon fence company today for a quote.
The information on this page was researched through the town of Wendell's website, the town of Knightdale's website, and the town of Zebulon's website. Wendell and Zebulon were great areas to expand our Raleigh fence company's coverage to. Wilson is about a half hour east of Zebulon. Goldsboro is about a half hour south of Wilson.
This Knightdale fence company constructs gorgeous wood fences throughout Knightdale, Zebulon, and Wendell.
