Wood

Here in the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham) area of North Carolina, the predominant wood used in fence building is pressure treated southern yellow pine. Properly installed, it can provide a long lasting, beautiful fence. At Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., we install wood fencing using the proper techniques, materials, and only the best installers. This page is designed to help educate the consumer on wood products used for fences for the Raleigh/Durham, NC. area.

Typically, at Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., we set posts 24″ in the ground for four, five and six foot tall wooden fences. This allows for the proper depth when set in concrete for the fence posts to support the fence. Before we dig, we call NC One Call to locate the underground utilities. After we have laid out the line of the fence, and dug the holes, we set the posts in concrete. Typically, 60lbs of concrete per hole on line posts, and up to 80lbs for the corners and gate posts (we use 6×6 posts for ALL gates).

We ALWAYS let the posts set in the concrete overnight, allowing the concrete the time it needs to properly set up. If this is not done, the chances of the fence becoming “shaky” or developing a “lean” are much greater. Some Raleigh fence companies will try to complete the fence in one day, not allowing the posts to set properly. As we are constantly trying to set ourselves apart from the “typical” fence contractor at Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., here is another example of something that may take a little longer but achieves a much higher grade of installation.

So, when you decide to choose to hire a fence contractor in Raleigh, ask some questions about their installation methods, and choose accordingly. It may cost you a little more now, but it will save you much more later!

At Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., we understand the importance of wood fence gates. The wood fence gate is the ONLY part of the fence you, the consumer, uses. The wooden fence gate is also the ONLY moving part of your wood fence.

Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., installs ALL gates with the same number of hinges as the number of rails present. This means, if your fence is 5 or 6 feet tall, it will (if properly built) have 3 horizontal 2×4 rails, therefore, 3 hinges are installed. Many fence companies will only install 2 hinges to cut costs. This, in my opinion, is a big mistake. The hinges are generally sold in packs of 2, which is why most contractors only install 2.

Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC., also installs 6×6 posts for ALL hinge side gates. Once again, I believe this improves the durability of the gate, as a 6×6 is stronger and less likely to flex or warp under stress. Usually, a regular 4×4 post is used for gates but we feel it is worth the extra cost to make the gate more durable.

Cost:

The most popular wood fence in the Raleigh/Durham area is by far the “Dog Eared Privacy” wood fence. As of March 2009, we have been able to install this type of fencing for as little as $12per foot (including 1 gate per 100 feet of fence). That price includes everything we discussed on this page; 6×6 posts for gates, 3 heavy duty black hinges, 2×4 rails,  5/8″ pickets, and concrete footers for the posts.

Price can vary according to the cost of materials, design, and number/size of gates. The only factor in the price changing is the materials, our charge for labor remains the same (unless custom features are added such as lattice). When I estimate the cost of your wooden fence, I price the lumber that day, figuring in every 4×4, 6×6, 2×4 and picket into the job. Labor is then added and the final price is determined.
